Pathmark Multicultural Arts Festival

  • Source: WPSG

August 2nd & 3rd

The Pathmark Multicultural Arts Festival is a longstanding tradition for Philadelphia families, a time to celebrate together and enjoy the arts and cultures of the world, with glorious singing and dance, along with gifts and sample products for the audience. The Saturday, August 2 and Sunday, August 3 event takes place on both the Main Stage and in the Food Court of the Gallery at Market East, at 9th and Market Streets. From Noon to 5:00 PM on Saturday, Noon to 4:00 on Sunday, it's all free.

Emceeing the program is Diane Brown, who recently received the Philadelphia Image Award at the African American Museum and has been inducted into the Museum Legends Hall of Fame. A popular radio personality, Ms. Brown works at HDMS-FM in a variety of roles, and has appeared in both movies and plays. She sings, plays the guitar and writes songs, including the Grammy-nominated "Thank God for Mama" or "Hattie's B. Daughter," which she wrote for Dorothy Norwood.

In addition to her hosting duties, Diane Brown joins another popular vocalist, Marcus Council, in First Class, a repertory group that features top Philadelphia singing talents. Last year they performed for England's Prince Philip and his wife during their visit to the US. Mr. Council first gained fame with The Soul Stirrers, Sam Cooke's original group in which Marcus Council took over for Mr. Cooke as lead singer. Mr. Council continues the Sam Cooke tradition, performing this beautiful music across the world.

Dedicated to the legacy of the Original Intruders, the Phyllies Intruders quartet was formed in 1997. The Intruders are popular across the country. Joining other oldies acts such as the Delfonics and The Temptations, they are known for their styling of songs like "I'll Always Love My Mama," "Cowboys to Girls" and "I Wanna Know Your Name."

Heaven Bound Gospel Singers is a classic quintet known for a cappella vocals, traditional hymns and spirituals delivered with a rich and silky blend of voices. Each member has a long history of musical performance. They were brought together in 2000 by Brother Patrick Rice, who is joined by Deacons Jones and Daniels and Brothers Bob Jones and Stanley Evans. Their latest recording is "Like a Palm Tree," produced by Most High Music Production. The CD can be ordered at UTube.com/heavenbroundgospelsingers.

The Seventh Principle ensemble performs drumbeats, calls and captivating movements created over centuries in Africa and the African Diaspora. Festival audiences, who are often drawn into the performance themselves, love the flamboyant costumes, authentic instruments and inspiring, athletic leaps and dances that are the ensemble's signature.
